The New York County Lawyers' Association (NYCLA), a bar association in lower Manhattan, hosted a slide show presentation of photographs taken by award-winning photographer Steve McCurry on July 13. Mr. McCurry, who has covered many areas of international and civil conflict, including the Iran-Iraq war, Beirut, Cambodia, the Philippines, the Gulf War and continuing coverage of Afghanistan, offered commentary about his sometimes hazardous travels in these war-ravaged countries. |

Following his presentation, Mr. McCurry signed posters that were available for purchase, the proceeds of which will help underwrite education programs sponsored by two nonprofit organizations - Women for Afghan Women (WAW), an organization of Afghan and non-Afghan women from the New York area who are committed to ensuring the human rights of Afghan women, and ImagineAsia, a foundation founded by Mr. McCurry that helps children in rural Asian communities by addressing fundamental education and health care needs. The photo in the poster that depicts a young Afghan woman, Sharbat Gula, first appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic and was used many times in magazine promotions. After a long search, McCurry was able to track Gula down in Afghanistan and photograph her again in 2002 after her husband allowed her to remove her burka for the photo. |
