In a corner of Balkh prison lives a woman named Amina — a woman whose life story is marked by pain, sacrifice, and motherhood. At first glance, her calm face may suggest she is simply a prisoner, but behind that quiet expression lies a story filled with grief, loss, and the struggle to protect her family’s dignity.

Amina was a kind and hardworking mother whose greatest wish was to provide a peaceful life for her children. She devoted herself to raising them in safety and comfort. But sometimes, fate can be far harsher than anyone could imagine.

A few years ago, a young man connected to powerful figures sought Amina’s daughter in marriage. Her family, valuing their daughter’s future and dignity, refused. What should have been a simple and honorable decision instead sparked a dangerous conflict. Unable to accept the rejection, the young man violently entered Amina’s home one day, intending to forcibly take her daughter.

What had once been a place of love and safety quickly became a scene of fear and chaos. In defense of her daughter and her family’s honor, a violent confrontation occurred during which the young man was shot and killed. After this tragic incident, Amina’s life changed completely. She and her two daughters were imprisoned on murder charges.

But this was only the beginning of her suffering.

The hostility that began with the rejected proposal escalated after the incident. In retaliation, individuals connected to the slain young man’s family killed Amina’s two young sons — the pillars of her life. Imagine a mother losing both of her sons while imprisoned, with her daughters beside her in the same prison.

The immense grief and trauma deeply affected Amina’s mental health. She spent many days in tears, sorrow, and despair, often feeling that all hope had disappeared.

Yet even in this darkness, a small ray of hope emerged.

In northern prisons, particularly in Balkh Province, the Child Support Center implemented psychosocial support programs for inmates. Through this program, Amina received psychological and social support from trained social workers and psychologists who patiently listened to her experiences and helped her regain hope.

Through counseling sessions, supportive conversations, and emotional guidance, Amina gradually began to emerge from depression and despair. She learned that despite all the pain she had endured, she could still hold hope for her children’s future.

The social workers not only supported Amina, but also helped secure a safer future for her children. Her two surviving children were referred to the Child Support Center, where they now receive comprehensive care. They live in a safer environment with access to education, psychological support, social care, and opportunities for healthy development. They study, play, and slowly begin to rediscover the joy of childhood.

For Amina, knowing that her children are safe and supported brings immense peace of mind. Today, she looks toward the future with renewed hope, understanding that even during the hardest moments, there are still people willing to extend compassion and support to vulnerable families.

Amina’s story is not only the story of a prisoner. It is the story of a mother who fought to protect her family, a woman who endured unimaginable loss, and a reminder that psychosocial support and compassionate care can help restore hope even in the harshest circumstances.
