From an early age, Behnoosh Behtar understood the transformative power of education. Growing up in Afghanistan, she was raised in a family that believed learning was something no one could take away—a foundation that shaped her dreams and continues to guide her today.
As a young student, Behnoosh envisioned a future centered on learning, service, and giving back to her community. But when circumstances in Afghanistan changed almost overnight, those dreams suddenly became uncertain. At just 13 years old, she made the difficult decision to leave her home and continue pursuing her education abroad, carrying with her the values her parents had instilled from the beginning.
Today, Behnoosh is a neuroscience student at Barnard College of Columbia University and a Youth Ambassador with Women for Afghan Women (WAW). Through her work, she uses her own journey to advocate for Afghan women and girls, reminding the world that education is not simply about earning a degree—it’s about preserving hope, creating opportunity, and empowering future generations.
For Behnoosh, sharing her story is about more than reflecting on her own experiences. It is a way to amplify the voices of countless Afghan girls whose ambitions deserve to be seen and supported. Through speaking out and serving her community, she hopes to inspire others to believe that their futures remain full of possibility.
