Communications Coordinator, VA (US)

Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is interested in hiring a detail-oriented, well-spoken, and energetic Communications Coordinator who can support WAW’s communications, program, and development teams to raise funds; promote and showcase our positive impact, accomplishments and successes; and to raise the organization’s visibility and expand our networks of support by managing the organization’s online, press, and other communications-related presence.

Remotely supervised by the Communications Manager based, in-person, at our New York Community Center (NYCC), the Communications Coordinator will be based at our Virginia Community Center (VACC) to ensure all our US-based programs’ growing communications needs are covered. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the VACC Program Director, the VACC Program Team, WAW’s US Country Director, and the WAW Development Team.

The position is full-time and hybrid, requiring three days a week in-person presence at our Virginia Community Center in Alexandria, VA. Travel to the New York Community Center once in a while may be required.

Main Responsibilities
The Communications Coordinator will execute the following tasks:

Communications Strategy:

  • Work closely with the Communications Manager and team to ensure the full and successful implementation of WAW’s communications goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with WAW’s Development Team in designing and implementing multi-platform marketing/fundraising campaigns and building donor partnerships.
  • Help implement WAW’s fundraising strategy across social media and other platforms in collaboration with WAW’sDevelopment Associate.
  • Support the Communications Teams’ efforts in maintaining and promoting WAW’s brand, overall visibility, and online presence.
  • Help execute the Communications Teams’ marketing strategy, including social media plan.
  • Manage online communications projects and social media platforms’ presence and engagement.

Press & Media Relations:

  • Manage and coordinate all press and media requests related to any of WAW’s US operations, including response to current events/articles/statements related to WAW.
  • Increase media awareness and press presence of WAW’s programs and impact, including but not limited to:
    • Drafting, editing, and finalizing press releases, and
    • Assisting in the drafting and submission of Op-Eds that help raisethe visibility of WAW’s work and needs.
  • Managing WAW’s media contacts and maintaining an updated press/media master list.
  • Assisting in the compilation and updating of press and media kits.

Promotional materials and communications:

  • Manage and update WAW’s archive of program-related print and electronic materials, including reports, newsletters, videos clips, brochures, presentations, and email announcements (e-blasts), while ensuring consistency in messaging and brand identity.
  • Manage and engage with followers on all of WAW’s social media platforms by producing and posting social media content and other digital and print media in a timely manner and to expand awareness of WAW’s operations and impact (both in the US and Afghanistan).
  • Drafting, proofreading, finalizing, and disseminating success stories to showcase the impact of WAW’s work in the US and Afghanistan.

Special Events & Development Projects:

  • Help implement the marketing, promotion, and publicity for all WAW events.
  • Support WAW’sdevelopment team’s fundraising projects, including WAW’s year-end and other appeals, fundraising campaigns, and other projects related to promoting and fundraising for WAW’s work in the US and Afghanistan.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of communications experience, particularly in the areas of social media, marketing and branding, public relations, and/or journalism.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent proficiency in managing posting and engagement on social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Ability to multitask and manage media deadlines.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and video-making skills (familiarity with Adobe Suite’s Illustrator, Photoshop, and In-Design, Canva, and video-editing software).
  • Ability to work proactively and to implement initiatives with little supervision.
  • Being a team player and having great interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in video production and editing

Additional Skills and Qualifications (preferred but not required)

  • Speaking and reading proficiency in Dari and/or Pashto.
  • Experience working in a grassroots nonprofit organization, preferably for women/girls.
  • Demonstrated commitment to building long-term power and opportunity for women/girls,low-income people of color, underserved communities

Compensation
Women for Afghan Women offers an attractive compensation package, including a competitive base salary with health and vacation benefits.
The position is full-time, hybrid remote and salary offered is $50,000 a year.
