Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is looking for a Boys Leadership Team Leader who is passionate about youth development. The Team Leader serves as a mentor and role model for the youth participants enrolled in the Boys Leadership Program (ages 10-15) and the Youth Rising–Boys Program (ages 16-20) held at WAW’s New York Community Center (NYCC). Participants are either first-generation Muslim Americans or recently arrived immigrants. The programs ensure that participants have a safe space to convene and openly discuss issues that pertain to them, such as college readiness, career development, culture, religion, women’s rights, and gender-based violence. Additionally, the programs develop participants’ skills in leadership, communication, and critical thinking.
The Team Leader, with supervision from the Program Coordinator, will be responsible for developing and implementing a curriculum that creatively instructs young men about gender equality, advocacy, college advisement, self-empowerment, and leadership. The Team Leader will also be responsible for coordinating with partner organizations in bringing guest speakers to lead some sessions.
This is a part-time position paying $25.00 an hour
Time commitment:
● Fall and Spring: Saturdays from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
● Summer: One month (July or August) — 3 days/week; 4 hours/day
Location: Sessions will be on Zoom until further notice (Office Location: 71-19 162nd Street, Unit CF-D, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365)
Qualifications:
● One or more years of experience working with youth in a non-academic setting
● Ability to connect and actively listen to tweens and teens
● Ability to create a safe, respectful, positive, fun, and welcoming environment by modeling professionalism and utilizing positive reinforcement
● Excellent communication skills to guide and motivate participants
● Excellent leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills
● Proficiency in curriculum development, desired but not required
● Knowledgeable about the U.S. education system
● Computer literate (not limited to Zoom, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Workspace)
● Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members
● Preferably a college student or a recent college graduate
