We believe that every child deserves a safe, supportive place to grow, discover who they are, and imagine what their future can hold.
Research shows what our work has affirmed for years: community-based third spaces are key to youth development. They are places where young people can build confidence, learn new skills, connect with mentors, and form the friendships that carry them into adulthood. Parisa’s story is a powerful reminder of just how transformative these spaces can be.

A Childhood Shaped by Community
Parisa, an Afghan-American young woman, first joined our Youth Program in 2018 when she was just 12 years old. Her family was already connected to WAW since her grandmother regularly attended English classes, so the center felt like a natural extension of home. Parisa began spending her afternoons with us.
“It was fun to come to the program. I loved that there was something different every day. I always looked forward to coming, learning new things, and making friends,” she reflects.
As her confidence grew, so did her curiosity. Through workshops, group activities, field trips, and community events, Parisa explored new opportunities and began to understand the value of having mentors who believed in her potential. At our community center, Parisa was part of a community that saw her, supported her, and encouraged her dreams.
Full Circle Moment
Today, Parisa is in her first year at Queens College, studying biology with a long-term dream of pursuing a career in medicine. Her journey from a youth participant to a young college student who is eager to heal and uplift others is nothing short of inspiring.
And now, she has returned to the place where it all began. Parisa is currently an intern at our New York Community Center, a full-circle moment that fills her with pride. She is giving back to the very programs that helped shape who she is today.
