  • How One Child Found Hope at WAW’s Children’s Support Center

    CSP

“She was like a child whose body was here, but whose soul was still trapped in that dark home.”

Sometimes children are forced to experience the heaviest pains of the world before they even understand the meaning of life. Pains that would be unbearable even for an adult, yet they fall on the small shoulders of a child.

This is the story of one of those children.

When she first arrived at WAW’s Children’s Support Center (CSC), she was not only a tired child, but a broken one. Broken by a home that should have been the safest place in the world, yet for her it had become the most frightening place.

It was a home that did not smell of safety.

    A Childhood Shaped by Violence

She had lived for years in an environment filled with conflict and violence. Her parents were always fighting, and the sounds of arguments, shouting, insults, and threats had become like bitter, repetitive music. A music that played every day and every night without stopping.

But the pain did not end with the arguments.

This child had been beaten many times; sometimes for crying, sometimes for speaking, and sometimes simply for trembling with fear. Gradually, her body and mind began to show wounds that were not always visible.

    The Wounds Everyone Could See

One visible wound was facial paralysis.

When this child, whose mother was incarcerated, was referred to our CSC, facial paralysis was one of the most painful signs of the harm she had suffered.

For a child, facial paralysis is not only a physical problem. For her, it also meant the heavy stares of others, constant questions, the teasing of other children, and a growing feeling of worthlessness.

This situation made her psychological condition even worse.

    Living with Trauma

She spoke very little, kept to herself, and did not trust others. In her eyes, there was something that had come far too early for her age.

When our team conducted the initial assessment, the signs were very clear. This child was not just sad; she was in a deep state of psychological trauma.

She would become frightened by the slightest sound. At times, she would suddenly fall silent, as if she had become disconnected from her surroundings. Sometimes she became extremely irritable, and at other times completely numb. At night she could not sleep peacefully, and most importantly, there was no image of a future in her mind.

She was like a child whose body was here, but whose soul was still trapped in that dark home.

After several counseling sessions and professional assessments, the team concluded that the child was suffering from complex post-traumatic stress.

This type of trauma is not the result of a single incident; rather, it is the result of years of experiencing violence, fear, insecurity, and helplessness. A child who has lived for years without safety in her own home gradually learns that the world is a dangerous place and that no one can be trusted.

This belief slowly breaks her from within.

Finding Safety for the First Time

The CSC was the first safe place in her life.

For many of us, a center is just a building, but for this child it was a place where, for the first time, she felt that no one would harm her.

Her first days there were difficult. She could not speak easily, she could not express her feelings, and she avoided close contact. Sometimes, even when someone spoke to her kindly, she would become confused because kindness was something unfamiliar to her.

But our team, with patience, professionalism, and kindness, began to walk beside her step by step.

That child was not just a client; she was a human being who deserved the chance to rebuild her life.

    The Path to Healing

Through individual counseling sessions, psychosocial support, emotional regulation techniques, trauma-informed therapy, legal awareness on child rights and protection, and repeated contact and conversations with her parents, we started helping her.

The goal was to help her recognize her emotions, manage her fears, build a sense of safety in her body and mind, strengthen her trust in others, and, most importantly, restore her sense of self-worth.

Alongside these services, the child was referred to a medical center, and medication treatment was also started under the supervision of a specialist in order to control the severe symptoms of anxiety and psychological distress.

This cooperation between psychological therapy and medical treatment became one of the key factors in her recovery.

Learning to Believe in Herself Again

We witnessed the first signs of growth.

Gradually, she began to speak more, smile more, connect with others, return to play, and, most importantly, return to herself.

Self-esteem was something no one had ever given her.

This child had grown up for years in an environment where she was made to believe that she had no value. But the center tried to show her that she was only a victim, not to blame.

She has the right to be loved.

She has the right to receive an education.

She has the right to have a future.

With time, she changed from a child who used to hide herself into a child who is slowly beginning to believe in herself. She is no longer afraid to speak, no longer ashamed to laugh, and no longer sees herself as small or worthless.

    A Future Filled with Hope

Today, this child is not only better psychologically, but she has also made remarkable progress educationally.

She has been able to learn how to read and write.

For a child who once could not even concentrate, this is a very great achievement.

    Now she can write sentences.

She can write her own name.

    She can write her dreams.

This means that she is no longer imprisoned in the darkness of her past.

Today, when we see her, she is no longer that silent and broken child. She is happier, more hopeful, interacts better with others, and sees the future as something possible.

In her eyes there is something that was not there before—the feeling of being alive.

She has learned that life is not only pain.

This is a result that brings peace to our hearts.

Investing in a Child Means Saving the Future

For this child, the CSC was not just a place; it was a second chance, a safe home, and a path back to life.

Today, this child is a clear example that shows that investing in a child means saving the future.
