    Youth

Q: When do you first remember walking into the New York Community Center?Β

A: This was in 2016, I was about 8 years old, I originally got to learn about the youth program because my mom was volunteering for WAW.

Q: What did you enjoy about the Girls Leadership program?Β

A: I enjoyed it because I got to talk to girls who were older than me, and had gone through experiences before me. I didn’t get to do that at school because I was only around people my age. I felt like I had a lot of siblings when I would come to the program. I really trusted the community from a young age.

Q: What are some of the activities that you would do?Β

A: I remember we would go on field trips and have meaningful discussions about topics. I remember that we would start the day by journaling. That’s what got me into journaling, and I still do it today.

Q: Do you feel that the youth program connected you with other girls and boys your age?Β

A: Yes, I made great friends over the many years I attended the youth program. I am still friends with them!

Q: What do you hope to be in the future?Β

A: Currently, I am 17 and a senior in high school. I am applying to colleges and will decide my major soon. I would like to be someone that helps my community.Β

Q: How are you involved with WAW now?Β

A: I still attend the youth program and offer guidance to other youth participants. I like that the other children can rely on me and ask me questions. I also intern once a week and help the case management team and other departments with their tasks.

Q: Last question, would you recommend the youth program to others kids in the community?
A: Yes! I would definitely recommend others to join this youth program because it helps build leadership skills and has helped me feel confident.Β
