  • The Fight to Reunite a Detained Afghan Teen with her Family

Najla, name changed to protect privacy, is an 18 year old girl who arrived in the United States along with her siblings and parents earlier this year in January. She is Hazara, which is an ethnic group in Afghanistan that has been facing violence and persecution for decades. The family fled Afghanistan seeking safety and security, and made the treacherous journey of arriving in the United States through the southern border.

Upon entry, the family was released and free to apply for asylum — however Najla was held back and detained by authorities and sent to a detention facility. Our legal team has filed different motions, trying to get her released from detention, arguing that her life is in danger if she returns to Afghanistan but unfortunately we have had no luck in getting her released due to changes in immigration policy.

It has been nearly a year now that Najla has been in detention, and her parents worry everyday if they will see their daughter again. Her final hearing will be held in January 2026, and our legal team is working tirelessly to ensure she is able to be reunited with the rest of her family. As we prepare for this crucial moment in her case, we continue to advocate on her behalf, gather the necessary documentation, and provide the emotional support she needs during this difficult waiting period. Her resilience fuels our commitment, and we remain steadfast in helping her secure the safety, stability, and family unity she deserves.

Our community has been facing increased enforcement given the current changes in immigration policy. We are here for our community and will do everything we can to make them feel supported, but we can’t do this without your support.

Please donate and keep our life-saving programs operating.
